Google has launched a slate of new AI-powered study features across Search and Gemini ahead of the new school year, alongside an offer giving eligible college students a free year of Google AI Pro (US) or Google AI Plus (140+ other countries). The move is aimed at making Google’s products the go-to learning assistant for students as it competes with OpenAI and education-focused startups.

On Gemini, Google has introduced a dedicated student hub bringing together study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes, along with interactive 3D visualisations and simulations that can be generated from a prompt, and Deep Research in Gemini Live, letting students kick off multi-step research reports by voice and discuss the findings once ready.

On Search, students can now generate interactive visuals for complex topics, take customised practice quizzes across subjects and major standardised tests, and create study documents from uploaded notes and slides. Additional updates include a Lens-based step-by-step problem-solving experience rolling out in the coming weeks, and Notebooks integration within AI Mode for organising class materials and past research threads.
