Edmonton’s Michael Monaghan was watching the news with a warm coffee on May 8 when he decided to check on some Lotto Max tickets he’d bought.
He was immediately greeted with a pleasant surprise.
“I scanned the very first ticket, and it said $1 million,” Monaghan said in a Thursday news release. “I was honestly breathless.”
His first thought was to call his partner and tell her the news.
“I took a screenshot of the ticket to show her and to show my son, who promptly asked for a dirt bike,” he said.
Monaghan plans to use some of his winnings to pay off his late mother’s condo, and “I also see a new truck on the horizon.”
He plans to use the rest of the money on trips to places like the Dominican Republic, Ireland, and Hawaii.
Monaghan bought his winning Lotto Max ticket from the Shell gas station near 127 Street and 132 Avenue.
