India has officially emerged as the largest global market for KitKat, overtaking heavyweights like Japan, Brazil, and Europe. The milestone highlights a massive decade-long ascent for the Swiss confectionery giant Nestlé in the Indian subcontinent; just ten years ago, India ranked tenth globally for the brand. With this achievement, KitKat joins Maggi as the second brand in Nestlé’s portfolio where India holds the top spot globally.
According to Nestlé India Chairman and Managing Director Manish Tiwary, the confectionery portfolio recorded high double-digit growth in both value and volume for the fiscal year 2026.
Nestlé India’s leadership attributes this hyper-growth to a aggressive pivot beyond the traditional wafer bar into new consumer demand spaces. To support this massive volume expansion, Nestlé India significantly scaled its visicooler programme, deploying commercial glass-door refrigeration units deep into both urban and rural retail networks. This infrastructure push successfully protected product quality against India’s harsh summers, allowing new innovations to scale rapidly. Simultaneously, a sharp increase in advertising spends and targeted demographic campaigns accelerated its market share, making it the fastest-growing brand in India’s chocolate category.
Originally created in the 1930s by British confectioner Rowntree’s, KitKat became part of Nestlé following an acquisition in 1988. While Nestlé controls the brand globally, it continues to be manufactured under a separate license by the Hershey Company in the United States.
