Poverty increases -> People are getting more desperate
The problem is not only getting more people in the door it’s keeping experienced people who have worked up the ranks. This needs to be maintained for a good number of years before the benefits are felt.
The demographics is a bit concerning though, as most of these recruits are white males. Not a lot are from minority backgrounds.
This also means the military pension will be quite high in the coming years, so provisions need to be made for it.
UK needs to look to recruit more Nepalese and foreign soldiers to do the actual fighting. it’s more cost effective and won’t cost British lives. Set something up like a bigger Gorkha force and a foreign legion similar to the French. But obviously they will not be granted citizenship at the end…just a good pension relative to their home country.
I think this is mainly due to the poor civilian job market, those who were intending to leave the military are holding off finding work elsehwere because they can’t.
I usually take these headlines with a pinch of salt. Military is unique in that they have to give you permission to leave. It’s easy to manipulate the figures and refuse people leaving. Especially with the escalations and unrest around the world currently.
Never understood why the army don’t advertise that they’ll fund 100% the cost of further education (c. £27k) once you’ve served 6 years, with no requirement to serve afterwards.
I’ve worked with a lot of US military and many of those I’ve talked to said that their future funded college education is the only reason they joined. We offer similar and yet the army don’t advertise that fact.
Not only would the free degree be worth it’s weight in gold but the added experience would be something to throw on a CV which would, in turn, make you more employable than a normal fresh grad.
Clinging to figures like this so they can hide the fact that the skill and experience gap is becoming enormous.
I’ve been on the Army website and it appears they received an unprecedented number of commonwealth applications to join our military in 2024. And are working their way through them.
