During extreme heat, people on certain medications can be more affected than others.

Medications, including GLP-1s, mental health medications such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, high blood pressure medications and antihistamines all affect how the body regulates high temperatures.

Dr. Diane Erdman, the director of Ambulatory Pharmacy at Ascension Wisconsin, spoke about the specific effect GLP-1s have.

“For GLP-1s, they work by decreasing appetite, but they also can decrease the thirst sensation, so it’s very important for those medications that they are drinking water on a regular basis,” Erdman said.

She said that blood pressure and mental health medications can increase fatigue and sweating, which can then lead to dehydration.

“It’s very important to make sure that you’re keeping hydrated during all this heat wave here,” Erdman said.

To stay safe during the heat, stay inside air conditioning or in shaded areas, keep hydrated, and wear lightweight clothing.
