Sony Group and the University of Tokyo have established the Sony Group Human Resource Development Fund within the university’s fundraising foundation to support the long-term development of next-generation talent able to work across organizational and disciplinary boundaries, the two sides said on July 1.

The fund will be managed as an endowment, with investment returns used to provide stable and continuous backing for the University of Tokyo’s human resource development initiatives over the medium to long term.

A central use of the fund will be the planning and operation of IGNITE, a cross-disciplinary talent program at the Boundary-Spanning Innovation Research Center, which the university plans to launch on Oct. 1 within its Graduate School of Engineering. The center will work with the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology to foster people who can create innovation across fields including technology, business and art, while also studying ecosystems built around the circulation of knowledge through industry-academia collaboration.

The center builds on experience from a social collaboration course run by Sony Group and the University of Tokyo since 2019, but will begin operating as a new organizational base for research and education. Through IGNITE, the university plans to offer training and events for students and run projects originating from student ideas and collaboration with a range of companies.

The program will draw selected students from across all years and faculties at the University of Tokyo, as well as students from nearby art and design universities in the Hongo area and selected students from around Japan. The university will also study program design and support methods so that the initiative operates as both an educational and research platform.

As part of the corporate partnership, Sony Group plans to work with students on collaborative activities including themes related to the overseas expansion of Japanese entertainment culture, according to the release.

The release also said the University of Tokyo plans to start UTokyo College of Design, a five-year integrated bachelor’s and master’s program, in fiscal 2027. The program is aimed at developing people who can address social issues and create new value. Sony Group will support talent development for the program through joint participation in project-based learning and by accepting students for internships.

The university is preparing for student recruitment and program launches for both the Boundary-Spanning Innovation Research Center and UTokyo College of Design. IGNITE began recruiting university students nationwide and young education staff on July 1, according to the release.

UTokyo College of Design is currently under application for establishment approval with Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, a standard regulatory process for new university programs in Japan, and details could change, the release said.
