When to seek professional help for stress

The latest results of the American Psychiatric Association’s annual mental health poll shows 70% of adults are anxious about current events, 77% are worried about the economy and 69% are stressed about gun violence.

So, when do you know that it’s time to seek professional help?

Dr. Kim Anderson, the regional clinical director of the East Region at the Eating Recovery Center/Pathlight Mood and Anxiety Center, said to seek professional help when stress impacts your daily functioning.

“So, if you’re having a hard time with work, or school, or social obligations, or relationships, things like that, if it’s interfering with life functioning, doing the things you normally enjoy, that’s another sign,” Anderson told 11 News.

Anderson said another indication when you should seek professional help is if you’re having panic episodes or are using substances more often to relax.
