Chef Henry Johnson, executive chef at Evelyn in Dallas’ Design District, is set to represent Texas on the upcoming season of Gordon Ramsay’s culinary competition Hell’s Kitchen.

The new season, dubbed “Battle of the States,” premieres Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. CDT on Fox.

For the first time in the show’s history, each competing chef will represent a different state, according to a news release.

Johnson will carry the Texas banner for the show, which filmed at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., the location of one of Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen restaurants.

“You are literally on camera 24/7,” Johnson said, who was discovered by a show recruiter on social media. “Besides being able to learn from a Michelin-starred chef, it was such a great experience pushing myself to the limit.”

The chef said the friendships he forged with fellow contestants were among the most rewarding aspects of the competition. Still, the most difficult part, he admitted, was being away from his family for an extended period.

“I’m extremely humbled and honored to be able to represent Texas in the upcoming battle of the states,” Johnson said.

At home in Dallas, Johnson leads the kitchen at restaurant and lounge Evelyn. The concept, from Reach Hospitality — the group behind The Mexican, Black Tap and Pie Tap — captures the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age while pairing it with modern dining.

Viewers across Texas will have the chance to watch Johnson’s journey unfold when Hell’s Kitchen: Battle of the States kicks off Sept. 25. Ramsay and his team will narrow 50 chefs down to 18 finalists who will advance to the show’s iconic kitchen.
