WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump tapped former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson as a senior national advisor for Nutrition, Health and Housing at the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA).
Carson, who is a retired neurosurgeon, said the MAHA movement is crucial right now because of the “massive” amounts of unhealthy conditions in the U.S., including obesity, mental health issues, as well as the “explosion” of autism.
Carson said autism cases recently increased from 1 in 4,000 to 10,000, to 1 in 36.
That’s a massive increase. That’s not a coincidence. There’s obviously something going on in sour society, which needs to be looked at,” he told The National News Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview on Wednesday.
We also look at the fact that our life expectancy is going in the wrong direction, whereas any other industrialized nation continues to increase. That tells us, once again, that there’s something going on. We’re putting artificial sweeteners, colors, all kinds of things, into our foods without paying close attention to what they’re doing. And one of the things that we’re looking at is what’s going on in some of the places that are also industrialized nations, but where their life expectancies are continuing to go up. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel; we just have to pay attention to what’s going on,” he added.
