Albany, NY (WRGB) — The New York State Division of Human Rights has unveiled a new call center, allowing residents to report discrimination over the phone for the first time. By dialing (844) NYS-DHR1 or (844) 697-3471, New Yorkers can connect with trained agents who will assist in filing a discrimination complaint under the state’s Human Rights Law.
Commissioner Denise M. Miranda, Esq. emphasized the significance of this development, stating,
The Division’s modernization efforts create a stronger, bolder, and more efficient delivery of necessary resources for New Yorkers seeking support in the face of discrimination.
The call center, part of a broader modernization initiative, aims to streamline the complaint process by reducing paperwork and providing real-time support. It also offers free interpretation services for non-English speakers. Once a report is filed, a copy is sent to the caller and the Division’s Intake Unit for further action.
In addition to the call center, the Division has improved its online discrimination reporting form to facilitate easier and more efficient filing. These changes are part of a comprehensive effort to enhance the Division’s operational efficiency, supported by increased funding and staffing under Governor Hochul’s administration.
The Division’s efforts include the establishment of new units focused on intake, internal audits, training, and solutions development, all aimed at improving agency operations. Since March 2024, staffing has increased by over 50%, including the addition of 50 new investigators.
