Doctor stresses moms should think of nutrition as medicine, especially after delivery.

When it comes to mom’s health, experts say we need to start thinking about nutrition as a form of medicine. That’s especially important during pregnancy and after delivery. “It’s tremendously important for the woman to focus on herself in terms of a healthy diet, getting the nutrients that are really essential during the postpartum,” said Dr. JoAnn Manson, Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine at Mass General Brigham.Manson said a Mediterranean-style diet can be a strong choice here because it’s high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and healthy unsaturated fats. She added moms will feel better and have more energy with the right ingredients, including: Two to three servings of low-mercury fish a week, like salmon.Calcium and vitamin D, which can be found in fortified dairy products.Protein and choline, which can come from eggs and poultry. Manson said what new moms should never do is crash diet right after pregnancy. Weight loss can wait. “A mom can be totally exhausted after the delivery and after the long pregnancy,” she said. “This is really a time for recovery, trying to rebuild strength. There’s been some bone loss with the pregnancy. You want to be sure that you’re getting enough of the nutrients to rebuild your strength.”
