Jacksonville sub shop says sales down despite not using recalled lettuce

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The CDC and FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to iceberg lettuce that has now reached nine states.

The recall began July 17, when Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.

The CDC said the lettuce was sold in different package types and distributed widely, including to restaurants and retailers.

In Jacksonville, Steve Wand, owner of Steve’s Subs and Salads, said his restaurant is not affected because it does not use bagged lettuce.

“I’d probably just let people know to check with local restaurants and just find out if they’re using bagged products or local produce,” Wand said.

Wand said salad sales have slightly declined this week and that some customers have asked him about his lettuce sourcing.

“It seems like salad sales have gone down. People are a little leery of eating lettuce, but we don’t use bagged lettuce. We buy whole head lettuce,” Wand said.
