A Texas chain devoted to Japanese teppanyaki is coming to San Antonio’s Far West Side. Shogun Japanese Grill and Sushi Bar will open its first Alamo City restaurant at 111 SW Loop 410, the former home of Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet.
A renovation listing at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) first leaked details on the upcoming project, but the Shogun website confirms the upcoming opening. A request for more information from the restaurant’s general manager was not returned in time for publication.
Shogun Japanese Grill and Sushi Bar is not to be confused with Shogun Japanese Steakhouse on Babcock Road, which closed in 2024. The new Shogun operates almost two dozen Texas restaurants, mostly scattered across the Houston area.
It specializes in teppanyaki — also known as hibachi — the popular post-World War II Japanese cooking style that uses an iron griddle to cook food. Shogun sears various vegetables and proteins, including chicken, calamari, steak, and salmon, often pairing the meat with yakisoba.
The chain is also known for its bento boxes with onion soup, salad, shrimp tempura, crab puffs, and harumaki (Japanese spring rolls). The huge list of sushi includes both traditional and fusion maki, hand-held temaki, sashimi, and nigiri.
The appetizer list is just as comprehensive. Online visitors can scroll through all the expected offerings (gyoza, edamame, chicken katsu) to hot charcoal grilled robata and a few original creations like Honey Moon, a combo of jalapeño, cream cheese, and snow crab.
According to the TDLR filing, the restaurant plans to add an additional 2,860 square feet of dining space to Dimassi’s former building. The Houston-based buffet chain quietly shuttered the location in summer 2023, but still operates an outpost off De Zavala Road.
The TDLR timeline states that construction will be wrapped up in early April 2026, but that is no firm indication of the actual opening. This article will be updated should the Shogun rep provide any further information.
