The final scenes appeared to confirm Mack’s tragic death, as his body was stashed away in John’s van. Could the fan favourite character be gone for good?

In tonight’s episode, Charity fretted about her husband who she believed was on a stag do in London following their recent row. Charity told Chas that she’d received no response from Mack after pouring her heart out over the phone.

Chas explained Mack’s point of view regarding the surrogacy, but Charity was furious that he had opened up to her instead of his own wife. She eventually put her ego aside and left Mack a voicemail promising to listen to his feelings.

Charity also asked Aaron to persuade Mack to call her back. But the conversation was overheard by John, who reprimanded Aaron for getting involved in his family’s drama.

Meanwhile, as the killer cleaned evidence off his van, he told Aaron that he had accidentally hit a deer while on a drive. Aaron tried to reassure his husband, but a visibly guilty John admitted: “I don’t deserve your sympathy”.

Later, the medic took action to cover his tracks by sending Charity a devastating message from Mack’s phone. The landlady was horrified as she received the text ending their marriage.

“I’m so sorry, Charity, but I can’t do this. It’s over,” the text read. “Please respect my decision, it’s best for both of us. I’m done fighting so I’m turning my phone off now. I’m sorry – M.”

Moira tried to defend her brother, claiming it was a drunken mistake but Charity was adamant he was serious in his decision. “Do you know what, Moira? He can stay in London forever for all I care. I am so done with him!” she fumed.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
