  1. I find it completely absurd that Boeing (and partners) were used over SpaceX simply because they held greater political influence. Congress, which controls NASA’s funding, pressured NASA to continue with traditional contractors — to favor local contractors and prevent lobbying against the program. — Not only is SpaceX Falcon Heavy more than 8x cheaper (and efficient too), but SpaceX technology is also more advanced and proven. I am_not_a big Elon Musk fan, but tons of red tape and political favoritism is no way to conduct a long term space program.

  2. The meaning of it is the meaning of life. To increase resistance to obtainable environment and persist existence.
    Moon is a hostile environment with no natural support.
    To live on a moon in reasonable comfort and reliability, is to develop the same systems to live in reasonable comfort and reliability, anywhere in the solar orbit.
