Claire Coutinho has strongly criticised Ed Miliband over his green energy policies, arguing that they are driving up household costs and limiting the UK’s ability to use domestic energy resources. She called on Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves to support renewed drilling in the North Sea, especially as global oil markets face disruption linked to tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz.

Coutinho claimed that Miliband’s approach to energy policy has added around £200 to household bills since the election, framing his environmental agenda as economically harmful. She argued that restricting fossil fuel production in the UK increases reliance on imports, which can be more expensive and less secure, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability.

She also warned that aggressive decarbonisation policies risk damaging British industry, summarising her position with the phrase “de-carbonisation means de-industrialisation.” As part of the Conservative Party’s alternative approach, Coutinho said they would remove carbon taxes and expand domestic energy production to reduce costs and support economic growth.
