Miriam Cates is joined at the ARC conference by Casablanca Declaration spokesperson Olivia Maurel, who shares her searing personal testimony of being born through a commercial surrogacy contract in Kentucky in 1991.

Maurel opens up about the deep “trauma of abandonment” and the massive identity crisis that led her to severe substance abuse during her teenage years. It wasn’t until a DNA test at age 30 gave her tangible proof of her origins, allowing her to finally locate her half-siblings and her biological surrogate mother.

Now a mother of three herself, Maurel is leading an international campaign against what she describes as a “new form of human trafficking.
