Foreign workers feel the heat as Japan hardens nationalist stance • FRANCE 24 English

On this week’s edition of Access Asia, we bring you a report from Japan, where visa fees have been increased for foreign nationals applying for permanent residency. The government is also considering introducing a language requirement. While Japan needs foreign workers to help offset an ageing population and a declining birth rate, the nationalist government has continued to tighten its immigration policies.

  1. "This is Mohamed Nazeer, he has fully integrated in Japanese society and culture"…. Shows Mohamed do Islamic prayers inside his mosk speaking Arabic and English 🙄

  2. It does not matter what the Japanese nationalists do – the native Japanese are not having children and are slowly disappearing.

  3. Immigration is just modern colonialism. Its not nationalism. Its just native people NOT wanting to be wiped out by colonist. If you call it "nationalism" then you're just showing your agenda is colonialism. Colonialism was always evil. But the impulse for conquest never stopped, it just loaded up new firmware and a new moral framework.

  4. Foreign workers help many countries grow. From Japan to France, and with products like air conditioners made by global brands in China reaching markets thousands of kilometers away, today's world depends on international workers, trade, and cooperation. Respect for all communities, including Muslims and others, is important. 🌍

  5. Japan needs to stop overworking their workers (example: pushing for a 32 hour workweek with same pay as a regular work week) and needs to actually lower the costs of raising a family. With the Fertility Rate at 1.14 children per woman (well below the replacement rate) and the rapidly aging Japanese population, the only other solution is to allow for more immigration (which will allow for it's population to sustain itself and keep the Japanese economy running).

Otherwise… good luck with losing (a projected) half of your population by 2100.

  6. It is a lie that Japan liberated South East Asia. The Japanese slaughtered, raped, looted, murdered millions throughout Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Burma etc etc

  7. Yet they have so many houses that are just falling down and nobody yo buy or fix them. Where is the new investment they badly need coming from. The population is in decline. God forbid they need men to join the military to defend the country

  8. Japan has a problem. They don't have enough children getting born. The population is aging fast. Their xenophobia will destroy them.

  9. Japan want immigrants to assimilate. Oddly, "enlightened" countries also demand varying levels of assimilation. "Don't throw stones when you live in glass houses."

  10. "Integration" lol. A 'Gaijin' is forever a Gaijin in Japan no matter how fluently you speak Japanese or no matter how long you lived in Japan.

  11. The Japanese are polite to tourists, but their xenophobia is not to be underestimated. Watch closely, as the birth rate is unbelievably low, and their economy faces serious stress without more workers

  12. Understand the point the Japanese government needs foreign professional workers due to their aging population and again Japan doesn't accept Islam weather professional immigrants or not.👍

  13. A lot of these illegal foreign workers abuse the country's lax enforcement on immigration and visitors' visa. Time for the country to get tough on these abusers. So French 24 calls this nationalist stance when a country enforces its immigration laws? Among the worst illegal offenders are from the same country as the talking head report this.

  14. Japan is the perfect case study for end stage capitalism, will be interesting to see what they do as the population continues to age and the birth rate continues to fall.

  15. Something tells me that rail network isnt going to bearound much longer. Orange man isn't liking the fact that China is selling millions of ACs to Europe, just sayin!

  16. While I understand Japan wants to be stringent about who gets into their contry as they should… That group and its leader is such a disfavor for Japan, the fact that he really said Japan liberated Asia in WW2 tell you all you need to know about that particular group 🤡

  17. The trucks in this case are Yakuza owned and operated, not political figures but they might well be paid by political figures.

  18. Not saying that Japan isn't in one of its usual anti-foreigner phase… But asking to speak the country's language to immigrate doesn't sound particularly "nationalistic" to me. How do you expect people to be part of the society if they can't even communicate?

  19. It is funny because on social media especially from the West I always hear all of this doom and gloom, not once while I have been in Japan for months on end felt anything but curiosities and warmth from people in general. It is a bit of bs in general.

  20. Japan needs immigration to keep its economy going yet they’re very nationalist the problem is coming for all industrialized countries
