Former Foreign Office diplomat Ameer Kotecha reacts to a leaked phone recording in which Home Office civil servants reportedly say they felt “threatened” by the sight of the St George’s flag. Kotecha calls the reaction “pathetic” and argues that officials should not feel intimidated by the display of England’s national flag.

“This stuff is rife across the Whitehall system,” Kotecha claims, questioning the culture within government departments and the attitudes of civil servants towards national symbols. The leaked recording has sparked a wider debate over patriotism, national identity and whether public servants are becoming increasingly detached from the views of ordinary people.

Kotecha says those involved need to “get a grip” and asks why the St George’s flag could be perceived as threatening in the first place.
