Thousands of people remain missing in wake of flash flooding in Nepal and Tibet

Sky’s Neville Lazarus reports from Kathmandu, where homes, schools and entire communities have been wiped out by the flash flooding that hit Nepal and Tibet five days ago.

A huge search and rescue operation is still under way, but thousands of people remain missing, and doctors have voiced concerns about the spread of disease from polluted drinking water.

People living near the riverbanks are still being evacuated as there are warnings that more flooding could hit the area in the coming hours or days.

  1. Nepal is paying the price for global warming.

    The Himalayas are heating faster than most of the world. Glaciers that took thousands of years to form are collapsing in seconds. The flood on the Nepal-Tibet border this week travelled 14 miles in under 7 minutes — not from rain, but from ice, rock and meltwater crashing down.

    ▪ 2,000+ glacial lakes in Nepal, 21 considered dangerously unstable
    ▪ Annual flood damage already costs Nepal $232M — 0.8% of its GDP
    ▪ 75% of Nepalis depend on agriculture and hydropower, both hit hard by erratic climate

    The people least responsible for emissions are losing homes, farms, and family. Nepal needs early warning systems, protection finance, and real climate action — not sympathy after the disaster.

  2. China was building a hydro electric facility by a glacier and all the construction caused a portion of the glacier to collapse, tumble down, and turn into a mudslide.
