Middlesbrough schools close early as community prepares for car crash funeral travel disruption

Several schools in Middlesbrough will close early due to anticipated transport disruption” as a funeral for one of the young men killed in a head-on crash on the A66 takes place.

At least six schools have confirmed they will shut their doors on Friday because “large numbers of people” are expected to pay tribute to Jakub Matusiak, 23, which could “congestion and traffic disruption.”

Speaking on GB News, Conservative’s Shadow Policing Minister Matt Vickers said it was “not acceptable” that people are not able to travel safely in Britain in 2026.

He said: “This is a community that wants reassurance. It wants to know that there’s calm and order and that the police have control of the streets. And actually what we’ve got to do is schools being closed early because we cannot guarantee that the kids can get home safely. That is a horrendous situation to be in in 2026. Kids can’t go to school because of expected disorder on our streets. That’s just not acceptable.”
