‘We must ‘force’ social media to redesign harmful algorithms, platforms that fuel addictive behavior

Charles Pellegrin is pleased to welcome Hannah Storey, Head of Children and Young People’s Digital Rights at Amnesty International. Digital spaces can provide even young people with community, self-expression, education and opportunities for activism. The deeper problem, she warns, lies in the architecture of the platforms themselves: the algorithms, infinite scrolling and other engagement mechanisms that can repeatedly amplify harmful material, stir up negative emotions and incite troubling behaviours – all to bolster a business model built around attention, emotions, addition, data and advertising.Β

  1. Both sides are wrong.

True freedom always comes with risk, which means it is inherently unsafe.

You can't try to fight restrictionism with a slightly less restrictive form of restrictionism, and then say you "support the rights and freedoms of children".

    It's pathetic.

I grew up in a time without this obsession with restricting social media. Most people my age long for a return to the "Wild West" period of the internet, not this stale, controlled, unimaginative and depressing "safe internet" we have nowadays.

  2. 1. the social media platforms can filter out the nastyness and all the junk that influences the children but the wont. Why? its like the scams on facebook and X…. THEY GET PAID 10-50 BILLION DOLLARS PER MONTH to put the filth/scams and so on in front of people because they are paid by scammers to do it.
    2. its easy start having massive fines on all these social media platforms including on google.
    3. parents will never follow up on that and if they do the kids can deactivate any and all security the parents put up…
