At 46, Brett Goldstein is in the best shape of his life. But the Ted Lasso star’s relationship with training began less with a lifelong love of lifting and more with the demands of the job.

Goldstein started working out seriously around a decade ago while preparing to play a superhero in Superbob. He kept going because of the mental benefits, but more recent roles have provided some additional motivation.

‘Being topless in stuff certainly makes you go, “Yeah, I really need to work out,”‘ he admits.

And when a beach scene with Jennifer Lopez in Office Romance appeared on the horizon, things stepped up another gear. One of Goldstein’s former trainers encouraged him to lift heavier and train with more intensity – an approach he’s continued since moving to New York and working with trainer Victor Del Valle.

‘He absolutely fucking destroys me’

‘It’s always superset circuits, very heavy weights,’ Goldstein explains. ‘He absolutely fucking destroys me Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and I spend the rest of the week trying to recover.’

Supersets involve pairing exercises back-to-back with little or no rest between them, allowing you to pack plenty of work into a relatively short session. Combine that format with the heavy weights Goldstein describes and it’s little surprise that recovery occupies much of the rest of his week.

That doesn’t mean he spends his days off on the sofa. Goldstein still tries to move every day, whether that’s walking or running, and adds a weekly reformer Pilates session to the mix.

But while looking good on camera might provide some extra incentive, it’s not the main reason he’s still training a decade after Superbob.

‘I have to exercise every day or I go mad,’ he says. ‘I just kind of stayed working out, because it really did help my head.’

The topless scenes may come and go. The training, it seems, is staying.
